Considering McGregor knocked him out in just 106 seconds in their first fight back in 2014, Poirier was delighted to avenge that nasty loss.

Heading into the fight as 1.32 favourite against Poirier, who was priced at 3.05, McGregor humbly accepted the defeat. “You know, it’s hard to overcome inactivity over long periods of time,” said McGregor. “I just wasn’t as comfortable as I needed to be, but Dustin is some fighter. If you put in the time, you’re going to get cozy in here. I have to dust it off and come back, and that’s what I will do … I’ll take my licks, but I’m gutted.”

The tough Poirier certainly deserves immense credit for his showing, for after getting off to a slow start that saw the Irishman land some good shots, he impressively withstood this to recover in fine style. Poirier then got some quality hits to the leg of his opponent, which set up the crushing knockout. In what was arguably the biggest victory of his career, an overjoyed Poirier was evidently chuffed after the fight. “I’m happy. I’m happy in the place I am and with who I see in the mirror,” he stated.

“The game plan was to not be heavy on my feet and throw power shots and box early. The game plan was to kick and wrestle and box, to mix it up and make it a mixed martial arts fight. To kick inside, to kick outside.”

In this colossal pay per view fight that was bought by a whopping 1.6 million fans, Poirier proved too good for McGregor who hadn’t fought in over a year.

Getting one back over the brilliant McGregor, Poirier will never forget this fight, which will unquestionably go down as one of the finest in his career.
