Underdogs: Charl Schwartzel at the 2011 Masters

Charl Schwartzel’s incredible win at the 2011 Masters was unquestionably one of the biggest shocks in recent memory.

Relatively new to the world of trading? Check out VOdds’ guide to sports betting.

The South African, who fittingly won the title on the anniversary of Gary Player’s triumph 50 years ago, closed out his round in glorious style by hitting four straight birdies. This would ultimately prove enough for him to clinch a remarkable victory, as his 66 was the best winning final round score by the winner since Nick Faldo in 1989.

Having trailed by four shots heading into the final day, Schwartzel knew he needed to produce a special round. And that’s precisely what he did, as he went on to win by two shots over Aussies Jason Day and Adam Scott.

In a stacked field that contained star names such as Tiger Woods, K.J Choi, Geoff Ogilvy and Rory McIlroy all fighting for the lead, Schwartzel held his nerve impressively. The same unfortunately couldn’t be said for McIlroy, as the Northern Irishman endured a torrid final round to let slip his four shot lead to finish tied for 15th after shooting 80.

At 26 years-old, he also became the youngest winner since Woods won the green jacket back in 2011.

Speaking after the triumph, he noted how he drew inspiration from countryman, Louis Oosthuizen, who’d won the 2010 Open Championship. “That was a huge inspiration,” Schwartzel said. “To see Louis win the Open Championship the way he did, you know, we grew up together from a young age. We played every single team event, tournament against each other, and we represented South Africa for so long.

“You know, we always traveled together, so we basically are the best of mates. We play almost every single practice round together as well. So we know where our level of golf is, and just to see him do it made it, in my mind, realize that it is possible, and just sort of maybe take it over the barrier of thinking that a major is too big for someone to win.”

With that spectacular triumph remaining Schwartzel’s only major triumph, it’s definitely a victory that will live long in the memory of golf fans all over.

Avoid Gambling Addiction

How to Avoid Gambling Addiction

Anyone from all walks of life is not safe from gambling addiction. It might start as something that’s fun or a harmless diversion. But, if not done right, it could ultimately lead to an unhealthy obsession with severe consequences. From sports betting to pokers, a gambling problem can negatively affect yourself and those around you. Although it can be a source of enjoyment or entertainment, over time, some people develop an addiction that can ruin their lives. For punters, this is one of the pressing problems that they have. Where does one set a boundary between safe and healthy gambling and with one that’s not?

What is a Gambling Addiction?

Gambling addiction or compulsive gambling is a progressive illness. It could begin when someone places a bet for the first time, or it could gradually progress into an addiction. The problem varies for each person, but compulsions often develop more quickly in people who continuously gamble. There are several signs that show when normal enjoyment of gambling transitions into a problem. That’s why the earlier it is determined, the better the chances for recovery. It might be hard to overcome, but many people have managed to treat it with professional help.

What can you do to prevent gambling addiction?

Acknowledge Your Addiction

The most important step to recovery is realising that you have a problem. It will take you a lot of courage, more so when you have already lost a lot of money and have destroyed relationships along the way. But it’s not too late. You should not give up because many have been in your shoes and have broken from the unhealthy habit. Keep in mind that you have the ability to rebuild your life.

Learn to Cope Healthily

Most times, those who like to gamble do it because they want to escape from their unpleasant feelings. Through gambling, they can soothe their emotions, unwind or socialise. But, because of this, it could turn into gambling addiction. There are ways to cope with what you are feeling in a healthier and more effective way. You can exercise, spend time with your friends, take up new hobbies or do things that make you feel relaxed and happy.

Have a Support Network

When it comes to battling with any addiction, it’s not something that you can fight alone. You need to have a strong support system, such as your friends and family. If your network is limited, you can try making new friends or reaching out to your colleagues. You can also opt to join a sports team or other clubs. Or, a helpful one would be joining a peer support group. You can find programs where former gamblers can provide you with invaluable guidance and support.

Seek Professional Help

There are mental illnesses that are often associated with gambling addiction. From depression, anxiety to stress, these can trigger compulsive gambling. Remember that even if you cure your gambling problem, mental illnesses are something that will remain part of your life. That’s why you need to get help from a professional to get the right treatments.

Not everyone suffers from a gambling problem. Take, for instance, professional punters who make a living out of sports betting or other forms of gambling. They know how to cope with the risks that gambling might, at times entail. It’s all about discipline and control.

For those who want to practice safe gambling, you can find a reliable platform with VOdds. Our API data, such as the soccer odds API can help you easily find deals and offers for your betting needs. Bayer Leverkusen surprise Bundesliga leaders

While Bayer Leverkusen enjoyed a solid campaign last season that saw them finish fifth in the Bundesliga and reach the quarter finals of the Europa League, not many expected them to be title challengers this season.

Relatively new to the world of trading? Check out VOdds’ guide to sports betting.

In what’s been a crazy season due to the worldwide health crisis, Peter Bosz’s men have handled the hectic domestic and Europa League schedule brilliantly.

Although they suffered a crushing loss to Bayern Munich on the weekend courtesy of Robert Lewandowski winner at the death, they had previously been the frontrunners on the table. Playing some extremely entertaining possession football, Bosz’s team hadn’t suffered defeat in their 11 previous matches, which highlights what remarkable form they’re in.

Boasting the second best attack and defence in the league, Die Werkself have been a huge challenge for any team, as their defensive pressing and incisive offensive work have been keys towards their success.

Possessing a well balanced team that blends youth and experience, the tactically astute Bosz has done a fine job at the helm. Getting the best out of his younger players, it’s been pleasing how excellently the likes of Moussa Diaby, Patrik Schick, Edmond Tapsoba, Florian Wirtz, Nadiem Amiri and Daley Sinkgraven have been performing.

The more experienced members of the squad such as Julian Baumgartlinger, Lucas Alario, Lukas Hradecky, Sven Bender, Lars Bender, Charles Aranguiz and Kerem Demirbay have complemented their younger colleagues superbly.

While Bosz has been delighted with his team’s form, he played down their success, stating: “I think we can all see that we are on a good run, but we haven’t done anything yet. It’s going to be a very long season.”

Having lost just once in the league all term, Leverkusen head into the winter break second on the table and well positioned for a title tilt when play resumes in January – which is certainly not what many predicted.

UFC: When Bisping beat the odds to defeat Rockhold

Ahead of Michael Bisping’s fight with Luke Rockhold, not many expected the fiery Englishman to stand much of a chance against the then middleweight champion.

Relatively new to the world of trading? Check out VOdds’ guide to sports betting.

Given just 17 days notice due to Chris Weidman pulling out through injury, Bisping, who was working on a movie at the time, jumped at the chance to fight Rockhold for the title.

With the fighters trading insults relentlessly in the build up to the fight, tension reached boiling point at the weigh in, with their aggression ramping up. This subsequently sparked further interest in the bout that headlined UFC 199 back in 2016.

Once the action kicked off, heavy favourite Rockhold started impressively by landing some solid kicks and punches, as the southpaw appeared to have the better of his adversary. With Rockhold feeling confident and looking good, the tough as nails Bisping took advantage of a lapse from his opponent to land a wicked hook before unleashing a flurry of punches which led to the fight being stopped.

Bisping’s unlikely triumph was incredibly his first title in the UFC, thus ending his decade long search to become champion. Following the entertaining first round stoppage, Bisping’s delight was evident, with him stating: “I’m an average guy. More than average. This is my dream. No one was going to take this away from me. Two days, two hours, two minutes. I’ll fight anyone, anywhere. Amazing.”

“Obviously, I am so happy right now. I started fighting when I came out of my mother, really. I have always been a fighter. It has always got me in trouble. But there is nothing I do better in this life than fighting.”

Beating the odds in style, the triumph also saw him become the first Englishman to win a UFC title on a night where the man recently inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame cemented himself as one of the best fighters ever in the sport.

Boxing: Lomachenko’s shock loss against Lopez

Heading into the highly anticipated bout between Vasyl Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez, the slick Ukrainian was widely tipped to triumph.

Relatively new to the world of trading? Check out VOdds’ guide to sports betting.

Considered the finest pound for pound fighter in the world prior to the bout, the two time Olympic gold medal winning Lomachenko was undone by the hugely talented Lopez, who unified the IBF, WBA and WBO titles in this colossal upset.

Seeing as “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko possesses such impressive movement and footwork, which has undone many an opponent, who can’t live with the usually elusive champion, “El Brooklyn” Lopez had clearly undertaken a thorough analysis of his opponent on tape to identify where he could get at his adversary.

Courtesy of SO

With Lomachenko starting slowly while he sized up his 23-year-old foe, this allowed Lopez to secure some valuable early rounds. Effectively striking Lomachenko with some quality jabs and right straights, in combination with his shrewd movement to stay out of reach, this enabled Lopez to gain some control.

Lomachenko would eventually kick into the gear in the eighth round, beginning to land some meaningful shots, as he finally took some initiative in the fight. Landing some powerful and incisive blows, he even rocked Lopez with a fast flurry in the ninth round.

Ultimately, though, despite his fast finish, Lomachenko left his run too late, as he couldn’t claw back the points or knock out the crafty Lopez. With the fight ending in an entertaining 12th round, where both fighters traded some searing shots, the scorecards all favoured Lopez (119-109, 117-111 and 116-112).

“A lot of people were talking highly about him and I expected more,” Lopez stated. “Basic. It was pretty basic, honestly. Maybe it was the 14-month layoff that did it, I don’t know. But I had 10 months laid off, so why does it matter? I fought the guy that everybody says is the pound-for-pound (best).”

“I’m a fighter. I got to dig in deep. I knew he was coming. I didn’t know if they had him up on the scorecards or not, and I love to fight. I can bang, too. I don’t care, man. I’ll take one to give one. That’s what a true champion does. I find a way to win.”

A deserved winner, Lopez, who landed 42 more punches than Lomachenko, was rightfully delighted after the fight. Set for a sensational future, this remarkable upset win will only serve to boost his already lofty confidence.

The sky certainly appears the limit for one of boxing’s brightest talents.

Solskjaer on thin ice at Manchester United

Following Manchester United failing to progress from their Champions League group after a disappointing 3-2 loss to RB Leipzig, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s the favourite to be the first Premier League manager to be sacked.

Relatively new to the world of trading? Check out VOdds’ guide to sports betting.

Needing only a draw to progress, Man Utd quickly found themselves 2-0 down inside 14 minutes with strikes from Angelino and Amadou Haidara giving Leipzig a dream start. Justin Kluivert then added a third on 69 minutes to extend the Germans’ lead to 3-0.

Needing a response to have any chance of qualifying for the Round of 16, star man Paul Pogba was introduced. And he unquestionably made a big difference, playing a key role in United pegging back two goals. But ultimately it wasn’t enough as the Red Devils lost 3-2, meaning they have to settle for third in the group and Europa League football.

Courtesy of Wiki

Considering United won three of their first four fixtures and were in the driving seat to progress, criticism for the Norwegian manager has come in from all angles. Never far away from being linked with being sacked such are the high expectations at United, this setback has kicked speculation into overdrive.

Ahead of the massive Manchester derby against Manchester City at the weekend, which ended 0-0, bookies had him priced at 2.00 to get sacked first among EPL managers. Indeed, this is quite staggering considering the many other struggling teams in the league.

With many supporters urging the club to bring in former Tottenham Hotspur boss, Mauricio Pochettino, it will be fascinating to see what happens next.

Having survived so many close calls already, Solskjaer will be hoping for a string of positive results fast, which should be enough to save his job for now at least.

Formula 1: Panis’ remarkable win in Monaco back in 1996

Widely regarded as the greatest Formula 1 race in history, Olivier Panis’ win at the Monaco Grand Prix in 1996 was a moment to savour for motorsport fans all over.

Relatively new to the world of trading? Check out VOdds’ guide to sports betting.

The weekend didn’t get off to a good start for the Frenchman, though, due to electronics problems during qualification, which meant he’d start the race in lowly 14th. This was certainly seen as a major handicap even if Panis knew the car had the speed upon considering the Monaco GP had never been won by anyone starting lower than eighth.

With the rain bucketing down and Panis believing in himself and the car, he achieved the unthinkable to claim his first victory in 15 years. Notching the fastest warm up lap, this served as a good omen for the race ahead despite the field including the likes of Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill, Johnny Herbert, David Coulthard, Rubens Barrichello, Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger.

Courtesy of Wiki

With many of the big names dropping out in the treacherous conditions and cause of engine failure, Panis seized his chances, racing through the pack early. As the track dried, a change to slicks was executed superbly by Panis and his team, which saw him gain some additional positions.

After Hill and Alesi were forced to retire, the lead was Panis’, but he still had to see out the race on minimal fuel.

Knowing he couldn’t win the race if he stopped like his crew were encouraging him to do, he asked his engineer what he needed to do to finish the race. Panis recounts the situation brilliantly in an interview on the F1 website, stating: “All my engineers, speaking in different languages, were coming onto the radio at different times and telling me I needed to pit for a splash of fuel.

“I said: ‘Look, just tell me the time I need to do each lap to finish the race with the fuel I have in the car. Every lap, I saved a lot of fuel. I didn’t use sixth gear, I didn’t push each gear on the upshift. I stopped the car in front of the podium, and the car never started again, because there was no more fuel! When it’s your day, it’s your day.”

What an end it was to an absolutely amazing race, as Panis emphatically etched his name into Formula One history on a day that will never be forgotten.

River Plate justifiably favourites for Copa Libertadores crown

Having lost agonisingly in the final of last year’s Copa Libertadores against Flamengo, where they took an early lead before the Brazilians bagged two goals at the death, River Plate are desperate to win the showpiece this time around.

Relatively new to the world of trading? Check out VOdds’ guide to sports betting.

Unquestionably South America’s elite club tournament, the Copa Libertadores is their version of Europe’s Champions League, and is understandably taken extremely seriously by all those that qualify.

In the case of River, they’re certainly looking the goods at this stage. Having finished top of their group that contained giants Sao Paulo, LDU Quito and Binacional with 13 points, they faced Athletico Paranaense of Brazil in the Round of 16.

Although Paranaense had been struggling in league action, they’d had a solid group stage and were improving steadily, River Plate headed into the tie as favourites. Dominating the first leg away for large parts with some crisp attacking football, they found themselves a goal down when Guilherme Bissoli gave the home team the lead with a fine goal in the 57th minute. Nine minutes later Paranaense went down to 10 men when Reinaldo received a red card, though. River eventually came back to snatch a draw and a vital away goal, as Paulo Diaz scored with an excellent header in the closing stages of the game.

Courtesy of Wiki

The Argentine outfit then registered a 1-0 win in the home leg to seal their passage to the quarter finals with a goal from the outstanding Nicolas De La Cruz.

Boasting so much talent all over the pitch starting with Armani in goal, who’s supported by the likes of Javier Pinola, Diaz and Robert Rojas in central defence, they’re not an easy team to score against. The fullback spots are then typically occupied by Argentine international Gonzalo Montiel and Milton Casco.

Then, in midfield, Enzo Perez’s leadership and nous is vital and gives the likes of Ignacio Fernandez, De la Cruz, Santiago Sosa and Julian Alvarez the platform to drive forward. Usual strikeforce of Rafael Santos Borre and Matias Suarez are a proven threat, who complement each other brilliantly. The likes of Lucas Pratto and Jorge Carrascal have shown what useful backups they are off the bench.

Possessing a quality blend of youth and experience and coached by one of the finest coaches on the continent in Marcelo Gallardo, who’s won the Libertadores twice as coach, they’ll certainly be hard to beat. Priced at $3.20 at the moment, they offer reasonable value for punters to take home the title too.

With so many other superb teams still in the competition such as fierce rivals Boca Juniors, Palmeiras, Gremio, Racing Club and Santos it won’t be easy. But knowing what it takes to go all the way, the favourite tag is rightfully theirs.
