Needing only a draw to progress, Man Utd quickly found themselves 2-0 down inside 14 minutes with strikes from Angelino and Amadou Haidara giving Leipzig a dream start. Justin Kluivert then added a third on 69 minutes to extend the Germans’ lead to 3-0.

Needing a response to have any chance of qualifying for the Round of 16, star man Paul Pogba was introduced. And he unquestionably made a big difference, playing a key role in United pegging back two goals. But ultimately it wasn’t enough as the Red Devils lost 3-2, meaning they have to settle for third in the group and Europa League football.

Considering United won three of their first four fixtures and were in the driving seat to progress, criticism for the Norwegian manager has come in from all angles. Never far away from being linked with being sacked such are the high expectations at United, this setback has kicked speculation into overdrive.

Ahead of the massive Manchester derby against Manchester City at the weekend, which ended 0-0, bookies had him priced at 2.00 to get sacked first among EPL managers. Indeed, this is quite staggering considering the many other struggling teams in the league.

With many supporters urging the club to bring in former Tottenham Hotspur boss, Mauricio Pochettino, it will be fascinating to see what happens next.

Having survived so many close calls already, Solskjaer will be hoping for a string of positive results fast, which should be enough to save his job for now at least.
