Priced at 2.75, just ahead of Liverpool at 2.85, Pep Guardiola’s men are understandably leading the pack, which makes sense due to their tremendous quality and the fact Liverpool have endured a torrid run of injuries.
The Citizens will definitely need to improve, though, for they currently sit eighth, six points of leaders Tottenham, with four wins, three draws and two losses. It’s important to note that they do have a game in hand. Nonetheless, their start has been below expectations, as they’re clearly not at their peak due to the minimal rest in the off season and the fact the games are coming thick and fast.
It also must be noted injuries have played their part, especially in attacking areas, where they’ve missed star forward Sergio Aguero.
Having scored 15 league goals from their nine games, they’ve struggled to create or score as many goals as they usually do. Although they’re not taking as many shots as in previous seasons, they still rank second in the league for shots per game on 13.45, so things should certainly get better in this regard.
Meanwhile, on the defensive end, they hold the joint third best record, as they’ve only conceded 11 goals and just 7.53 shots per game (second best in the league). Looking much more solid since Ruben Dias was signed in the summer, he and Aymeric Laporte have formed a brilliant partnership so far.
With some hugely challenging fixtures ahead, City still have to play Manchester United, Southampton and Everton before the end of the year, they’ll want to hit their peak sooner rather than later.
Blessed with an amazing manager and a supremely talented squad, if City can keep their solidity at the back and lift their effectiveness upfront, they’ll be right on track to reclaim the title. It unquestionably won’t be easy with so many matches and a plethora of excellent teams in the division, but City are deserved favourites and will back themselves to go all the way.
